BIG COAL STRIKE

EFFORT FOR NEW CONTRACT

WASHINGTON, June 29.

Following a fortnight's futile negotiations, telegraphic instructions were sent out from the headquarters of the United Mine Workers today ordering all miners in the soft coal industry to strike at midnight on Sunday. It is estimated that' 450,000 will be affected by the strike call.

Unionists are attempting to effect a new contract with the operators embodying most of the provisions of the N.R.A., but the owners refused to yield on the question oi' "open shop." The owners estimate that they have tJO days' supply of coal, and indicated that they did not believe the stx-il;e would seriously tie up the industry.
