CARNIVAL DANCE

(By Our Special Correspondent.) | LOWER HUTT, This Day. : The Railway Worshop's Hall was ' very gay and cheerful on Saturday : night when the committee held a dance for Miss Dulcie Nicholls, one of the queen candidates. There were about ■ 600 dancers, the ball being filled to 1 capacity. Bright streamers and twink- . ling lights of every shade added notes of colour and warmth to the hall, and many novelty dances were enjoyed. During the evening hundreds of balloons were released from the ceiling, one having a lucky number attached. , Miss Nicholls (who was wearing a pretty gown of pink silk net and sequins), was presented with a bouquet, and thanked the committee for the splendid effort they had made for her. Among those dancing were Mesdames H. Pascoe (who wore white satin and lace), Gray (blue floral marocain), Smith (red marocain), Guise (blue lace), Marshall (amethyst lace), H. Bently. t ' ■ ~" ' Children's Party. ■ A very happy party was held in the f V.M.C.A. Hall, Petone, on Saturday afternoon, the proceeds being in aid o< the queen candidature.of Miss Vera Burns. There was considerable exr citement among the children when it was learned that "Uncle Campbell," of 2YA, was present, and was to entertain them for the afternoon. All the children formed themselves into a circle, where they played games and sang many popular songs. Mr. Ron Meek kept his audience in wonderment at the magic he performed with his conjuring tricks, when he brought balls from nowhere and "swallowed" all kinds of extraordinary things. Valeric McMillan gave a delightful jockey dance, Joan McDougal and. Phoebe Lawson performed skipping dances, and Meta McKenna gave an Irish jig. Elocutionary items were given by Miss M. Burkett, and Miss Ena McLean. An energetic committee provided an enjoyable afternoon tea, this being followed by a "lucky fish pond." "Uncle" Campbell presented Miss Burns to the children, the "Queen" being received with loud applause.
