BALLANTYNE MEMORIAL
With the racing strength of the club in splendid form and with the libe-rally-handicapped men making the most of their times, the Ballantyne Memorial Trophy race produced some good competition. Conceding in several cases over six minutes, A. L. Stevens and J. Riddington made a close race for the fastest time honour, the latteirunning into third place for a popular win. R. White, oil' smin 50sec, was the first man home, taking the trophy. The event, which is dedicated to the late "Billy" Ballantyne, drew a field of 30 runners. Results were as follows:—R. White, smin 50sec, 1; R. Henderson, 6min, 2; J. Riddington, 12sec, 3; A. L. Stevens, scr, 4; R. Violich, lmin 40sec, 5; J. Garty, lmin 40sec, 6. The fastest times were:—J. Riddington, 12sec, 32min 6sec; A. L. Stevens, scr, 32min 33sec; V. Tunbridge, 41sec, 33min 49sec; R. Violich, lmin 40sec, 34min 34sec; J. Garty, lmin 40sec, 34min 36sec; W. Scobie, lmin 12sec, 34min 43sec.
At the invitation of Mr. W. Ballantyne, sen., and Mrs. Ballantyne, over 100 members and supporters were entertained to afternoon tea in the Maranui Surf Club's pavilion. Mr.1 J. W. O'Neill, a foundation member of the club, spoke on the history of the \-ace, Mr. Lauchlin presenting the cup to R. White.
Mr. W, A. Baudinet was called upon to pres.ent service badges to Mr. and Mrs, BaUarityne, Mr. J..W. O'Neill, Mr. G. Zander, Mr: W. Ballantyne, jim/, and Mr. P.. H. Holmes. The opportunity ■was also .taken of making a presentation to. Mr.- and Mrs. R. Holmes on the occasion of their recent marriage.
