HARRIER RUNS

PRESS- CUP RACE

FINE WIN BY C. CHALK

BALLANTYME TROPHY

Harriers turned out in full strength on Saturday afternoon when club races were held, following the Dome Cup inter-club event, which ■ opened the season last week. The principal events of the afternoon were the Wellington Club's annual teams' race for the Press Cup, and the Scottish Club's annual race for the Ballantyne Memorial Trophy. Four teams faced the starter in the Press Cup race, over one lap of the Vosseler Shield course at Lyall Bay. _

Mr. W. Whelan again proved his versatility as a handicapper when T. Mulcahy's team and M. Cooke's team head-heated for first place with 32 points each. The placings .were as follows:— Cooke 2, McKinnon 4, Beere 12, Willets 14, 32 points; Mackay 6, Mulcahy. 8, McAuley 7, O'Brien 11, 32 points ;equal 1. McConchie 3, Owens 5, Thomas 10, Brawbridge 16, 34 points,

3. The individual running saw Dome Cup form practically reproduced. Brady led the field on to the beach, but with the.beach covered the field was strung out, while Chalk, Cooke, McConchie, McKinnon, and Mackay comprised the van. Chalk led up the hill and from this stage held his lead handsomely. He was not extended to win in 33min' 7 2-ssec. Cooke and McConchie battled together over the hill but Cooke forged ahead on the golf links, although he failed to make up the leeway on Chalk. McKinnon set out after McConchie and ran solidly to finish only 5 seconds behind him. Owens displayed a return to form to annex fifth place, but the performance of- McAuley, one of the club's most, promising youngsters, to fill seventh berth was full of merit. Fastest times were as follows: —C. Chalk, 33min 7 2-ssec, 1; M. Cooke, 33 mm 55sec, 2; J. McConchie, 34min 15 sec 3; S. McKinnon, 34min 20scc, 4; W. Owens, Stalin 39sec, 5; A. Mackay, 35min Ssec, 6; A. McAuley, 36min 27 sec. 7; T. Mulcahy, 36m.in 29sec, 8. The club loses a stalwart in Mr. T. Mulcahy, who has received notice of transfer to Wanganui ; Next week's run is to be held from Lyall Bay.
