Wellington played with the sun and wind behind them in the first half, and were soon on the attack. Play, for the most part was in Old Boys' territory early in the spell, bad handling and sound tackling keeping Wellington out. Old Boys' backs went well whenever Sadler was given opportunities to send them away, Gray making strong dashes and Binning going close in a spectacular run before his pass was dropped. The Wellington pack took play to the other end, where Hislop picked up in the loose and drop-kicked a neat goal. 4-0.
