SOCIALIST POLICY
A LEADER'S ADDRESS
An address was given; by Sir Stafford Cripps at a Socialist League' Conference at Gateshead. '
"If banking and the land could be transferred rapidly, into the hands of the community," he said, "it would be an extraordinarily difficult thing for capitalists to oppose the complete socialisation of tho country. The House of Commons is the only democratic, part of the Constitution.
"But we-shall have to reorganise the methods of legislation. In tho House itself that is a smaller matter. We do not propose to go into the fight with either hand tied behind our back. Every single device of the Constitution must be available to usV—emergency powers, if thoy are wanted. It.wo do not outline a policy soon tho young people will join the. Fascists or the Communists. Nobody sensible can become- a convinced Fascist.
"Fascism has, been brought about because economic circumstances under the existing system. have- grown so difficult that if the workers and the mass of the people ■ were. allowed to retain their voice and power Capitalism would be bound to bo brought to an end." . ; ■■ '-,
