PETONE DEFEAT SWIFTS

Petone defeated Swifts by 5 goals' to 2 at the Petone Recreation Ground: The teams lined out as follows:— : Petone: McVean; Scott-Brown, Haines; White, Campbell, Smith; Watson, McGiqny, Leslie, Cunningham, Woods. Swifts: Bradford; Diekson, McLune; McGregor, Long, Dainty;. Kelly, Bilbyj Shankie, Hamill, Hawken. Referee: Mr. J. Graham. Petone won the toss and Swifts opened play against a nasty breeze. The home, team penned Swifts in their own ha\t, where Diekson and McLune defended heroically. A breakaway by Kelly saw Shankie let fly a shot which McVean gathered high against the post. Swinging play by Petone failed to bring a counter until Watson adroitly hooked towards goal, where Cunningham scored from under the bar. Petone 1, Swifts 0. Tricking Campbell smartly, Shankie tore upfield but was dispossessed by Haines before any damage was done. From another Watson cross, Cunningham put his side further ahead with an unexpected, but clever, flick of the foot. Petone 2, Swifts 0. Kelly, Hamill, and Hawken broke away in turn, but were out of hick, Brown proving the stumbling block. Disaster overtook Swifts when Leslie notched twoi goals in quick succession, one from a concerted move on Petoue's left, and the other from a carpet pass from Campbell. Petone 4, Swifts 0. Kelly and Hawken made praiseworthy efforts to reduce the leeway, and Shankie just failed to count with a fast header. McVean, however, was always, oni. the. spot. Swifts' pluck was .rewarded when Kelly cut in and transferred to Hawken, who, sidestepping the opposition, chose his spot in the net, and made scoring look easy. At the interval the scores were: Petone 4, Swifts 1.

Swifts were seen to advantage in the sec-, ond spell. Kelly was early prominent and from a lovely cross two inside men missed the easiest of chances. Cunningham was in good shooting-form only to find Bradford alert. After Hawken had sent narrowly past, McVean made a fine double save from Hamill, then from Shankie and Kelly. Leslie secured his "hat trick" following a misunderstanding by the Swifts' defence and after a Cunningham Bhot had rebounded from Bradford. A few minutes before the whistle Bilby scored for Swifts, making the final score; Petone 5, Swifts 2.
