LONDON HIDE MARKET.
Weddel and Co., London, March 20, report "that after a certain amount of selling, in which the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. participated, frigorifico hides have advanced to 69 cents, this being the equivalent of about 5 3-Sd per lb. The most important and encouraging feature of the week has been the big clearance of packer hides in the U.S.A., for 200,000 were disposed of and advances of % to 1 cent were established; bringing cows and heavy native steers on to the 10-cent basis. It is now reported that packers are hopeful of making further advances when the next sales are made. We see no reason for taking other than an optimistic view of the immediate future in view of the strong statistical situation. At the same time it should not be overlooked that the possible prohibition of import of hides into Germany may upset the forward trend of the market. Germany has been a very important buyer for some weeks' now and her absence would be undoubtedly felt very much. Miscellaneous and colonial hides are causing little or no attention, as tanners in this country are operating on a very modest scale. There is practically no change in values worth mentioning. The leather market continues slow, and as yet no improvement is in sight.
