UNFAVOURABLE FORECAST

The meteorological forecast is for strong west to south-west winds to gales. The -weather is still.likely to be cold and showery in districts, with a westerly aspect, and mainly fair m eastern districts. Some inland frosts 'are-probable tonight. _ The intense depression which has been covering tl\o Dominion has made littlo eastward progress since yesterday, and barometers sre still low everywhere. Squally and changeable conditions have prevailed, with strong westerly, and in places south-westerly, winds. Rain has fallen at times in all but the eastern districts, and a fe\f places have had hail showers. Snow has also been reported on some of tue ranges in the South Island. Temperatures have become colder,, and frosts occurred in parts of tho South Island last night. ■ ' It was dull and squally at Wellington yesterday. ' A high west-north-west wind blew in the morning, but decreased in force during the afternoon, and rain fell between 3.30 and 6 p.m. Thero was also a heavy shower just after 8.25 p.m. The total rainfall was 21 points, while Lower Hutt had 69 P°At Auckland the weather was fair yesterday, with a westerly breeze blowing. ' The night, however, was showery, and this morning it was raining there, while there was a fresh south-west Christchurch hnd another sunny day, with a strong north-west wind. The sky clouded over in the evening. There were eight degrees of frost last night. Duncdin also experienced fine sunny weather, yesterday, and light rain fell during tho night. . ■

He has been awarded the MakdougallBrisbane Prize by the council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his contributions to mathematical research, published in the proceedings of the society. The prize is awarded biennially for original contributions to the advancement of any science. Dr. Aitken is lecturer in statistical and actuarial mathematics in the University of Edinburgh, and is a frequent contributor to mathematical journals.
