THORNDON ESPLANADE

CITY COUNCIL CRITICISED

In a, statement to "The Post," Mr. J. D. Sievwright, who is a Civic League and Ratepayers' Association ■ nominee for : office on the City Council, criticises the action of the council in connection with the Thorndon Esplanade. For this reserve of seven acres, states ■Mr. Sievwrigh,t, the council claimed £105,000 compensation. They were offered £35,000, and by taking the matter to Court, they obtained £20,000. Under an Act o£ Parliament, this amount was specially set aside and paid into a Separate account for the purchase of another reserve for "recreation for the inhabitants of the city of Wellington." : The council, however, did not do this. They put a clause in a "washing-up" Act in 1925 that repudiated their obligation under. the Reclamation Act of 1921-22, and allowed the council1 to spend £14,000 of the £20,000 it had not yet obtained on street "widening,, although they had borrowed and spent nearly £500,000 for that purpose. • ... "That conduct is not fair to citizens, and" it should be the duty of the incoming council to see that amends are made in the interests of the healthful recreation of the people," states Mr. Sievwright. - - ■ . ■ ■ •■ ■■
