STOWAWAYS FINED
Leonard Kennedy, a labourer, aged 40, and Henry Wilson, a labourer, aged 53, were each fined £2 by Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday for stowing away on the Wahine at Lyttelton on Tuesday.
Senior-Sergeaut Edwards said the two accused went on board the Wahine at Lytteltou yesterday afternoon, and hid until the ship had sailed. They then made themselves known, and said they had no money. They also said they had walked from Christchurch to LytteJton, as they thought that once they got to the North Island they ..woiild 'be iibl« to sect work in the Wairnrapa.
. The accused asked for time to hud the money, but Senitr-Sergeant Edwards told the Magistrate that they had no money at all, and did not appear to have much chance of getting any work. Mr. Page declined to grant the request, and fixed default of payment at seven days' imprisonment. He intimated, how-' ever, that the police would give the accused facilities to. get the money from friends if possible. ■
