Through the introduction of firearms to New Zealand, the deaths of 80,000 Maoris are estimated to have occurredf said the chairman of the Anthropology and Maori Eace Section of the Auckland Institute and Museum, Mr. James M'Veagh,'in an address on Wednesday, reports the "New Zealand Herald." "Tliia was a terrible toll for such a short^period, and it shows tKe ferocity of the old-time Maori," Mr. M'Veagh said. "The Maoris fought battles among themselves with firearms -for only a few years, and there was no notable tribal conflict after 183 a,"
