"It.has been said that newspaper articles induced the Government to do what it is proposing to do in the matter of wage and salary reductions," remarked . the' Minister, of rNative Affairs (the Hon. Sir ■ 'Apirana: Ngata) in •'the House of Eepresentatives last night. I "Well, I suppose I read one leading article in three months." ' ' ' Mr. J.M'Combs (Labour, Lyttelton): "You didn't make the decision." . • "I had'something to do with it, Sir Apirana replied, "although I am a Maori Minister. (United applause.) Up to a point, it haß been the part of the Maori members of the House not to butt into what may. be purely pakeha subjects, but this matter has gone beyond that; it is affecting all of us."
