FINANCIAL CRITICISM
MR. STEWART ATTACKS
GOVERNMENT
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NAPIEK, This Day.
The Hon. "W. Downie Stewart spoke at Haveloek North last night in support of the candidature of Mr. W. Tucker, the Beform candidate for the Waipawa seat. . .'■■■ '
Mr. Stewart denied the United Party candidate's allegations that the Beform Government had been extravagant in expenditure. He claimed that when he was Finance Minister lie had balanced the Budget on three occasions, despite difficult periods which hie had come through, but said that in 1928, when he was at the Treasury for only eight months, he had no opportunity of reducing expenditure when it became apparent that there was a fall in Customs revenue. Despite the fall in Customs revenue, the United Government had .increased taxation heavily, and it allowed expenditure to mount by over a million when there was a surplus of only £150,000.
