WEATHER AT NIUAFOU

FAVOURABLE REPORT

According to information contained in a cable message which has been received by the New Zealand Astronomical Society from Dr. C. E. Adams, who is. in charge of .the New Zealand Eclipse Expedition, weather and observing conditions at Niuafou Island appear to be favourable. :

The text of the cablegram is as follows: —"Following received from Dr. Henry C. Kellers, medical officer, biologist, • and meteorologist, American expedition: From 28th August to 30th September—Temperature, maximum 88, minimum -61; barometer,, 29.9; daily variation, one-fifth inch; humidity, 80. Rainfall on 11 days. Heaviest 80 points 30th August; 70 points during September. \Double_ lunar halo 4th September. Landing possible three days out of'four, depending on direction of wind. Prevailing wind, south-east. Wind variable for six days. At eclipse time, 9 a.m., sky'clear during half this period. No earthquakes registered on seismograph by Dr. Jagger. All well to-day."
