Though Phar Lap is tbe. favourite for tlm Melbourne Cup, it cannot be. denied that he has a stiff task hi front of him. 3t was the .'very general expectation that his weight, 9.12, in the Cup would be about what the handicapper has awarded him, yet the fact that this weight is 351b over weight-for-age must be1 given due consideration. Carbine certainly won with Mb over weight-for-age, but.then he was a five-year-old, and Patron's record, of 9.3—the best" for a four-year-old winner— still stands. Windbag, who won with 0.2, had nothing to spare from the thvee-year-old Manfred, who also carried 21b over the scale. ; " : Of the horses that have won with heavy imposts, Carbine won with 10.5, Poitrel 10.0, and Malua 9.9, but they were all over four years, as was Wakeful when she ran second with 10.0. In addition to Patron and Windbag, four-year-old winners in the past 40 years have been Malvolio 8.4, The Victory 8.12, Comedy King 7.11, Piastre 7.9, Kingsburg 6.12, King Ingoda 7.1, and Statesman 8.0.
