ILLEGAL ART UNION
(By Telegraph.—Press Aseociation.) DTJNEDIN, This Day. At the Police Court, Christopher Conn was fined £3 for conducting a. scheme in which money prizes wore gained by a mode of chance. The defendant was the secrotary of a committee which ran the St. Kilda Beach Carnival with a scheme for. selling tickets for which prizes wore allotted. After issuing a largo number of tickets the committee was refused a permit by the Internal Affairs Department, but it was too late to withdraw. . Counsel pointed out that Conn was merely tho scapegoat for tho committee, and a conviction under tho Gaming Act had consequences more serious than the fine imposed. The Magistrate, Mr. Bundle, said that it could have been obviated by proper application. Ho had no option but to convict. .
