Police eases in the Magistrate's Court to-day were dealt with by Mr. E. Pa^e, S.M.
Two first-offending inebriates, who did not appear, were each fined 10s, the amount of their bail.
"He lias been thrown out of work, by the 'talkies,' and now earns his livelihood by hawking haberdashery from door to door," said counsel when appearing for Homer Barclay Oliver, a musician, aged 37, who was charged with being £77 5s in arrears on a maintenance order made for support of his two children. It was stated in evidence, however, that the defendant had been forced to leave his position in a picture- theatre in Auckland two years ago on account of bad teeth. Oliver was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, the warrant to bo suspended as long as he pays £1 10s a week.
