AT WANGANUI

PHWHERO'S BRILLIANT DISPLAY CElh'UItY HURDLES TO RED FUCHSIA (By Telegraph from "Vedette.") The steeplechasing ranks were depleted «till further at Wanganui-on Saturday, . when- Peter Maxwell was added to the casualties. Puwhero gave a great display of jumping in the Grandstand Steeple- ■ chase, leading practically.all the way with ■11.13. .It was a fine effort, and was received with applause. The Century Hurdles, run for the first time on the second day of the fixture, and ' at a distance of about two miles and 150 yards, provided an interesting enough contest, and Red Fuchsia probably owed his wiccess more to good riding than his.superiority, to Pcrle de Lfcon. The attendance appeared to bo quite good, but the totalisator turnover was £27,491 10s, compared with; £29,163 last year. The decrease for the meeting was £2693 10s. The track was rather soft after rain. . . RATA HACK HURDLES. Mister Gamp and Troilus were the prime picks, with Hymestrason at a good price, but not so big as one might expect. Glengariff led to the first fence from Hymestrason, Eafa, Ballyfarnon, and Peueus, with Shining Armour drifting to last, and he refused at the second fence. At the .stands Hymestrason led Rafa', Whisogne, Peneus, Ballyfarnon, Peshwa, and'Troilus, . with Mister Gamp a long last. The lastnamed made his run down the back, and , across' the top the order Was Whisogne and Peneus, with Hymestrason, Ballyfarnon, and Peshwa next, with Mister Gamp' .going fast. At the last fence Hymestrason just led from Glengariff, Whisogne, and ■ Mister Gamp. Mister Gamp finished very fast and just failed to reach Hymestrason, ' who won by a length. Glengariff was , a length away third, with Ballyfarnon, Troilus, Peneus, and Peshwa next. Hymestrason jumped one fencd badly, :but otherwise gave a good display. Possibly he was lucky to beat Mister Gamp, who jiist scrambled over the fence which troubled him the first day. He finished at ■ a great rate from an impossible*, place. (Jiengariff is still improving, and due a£ any time. Ballyfarnon also showed up well, but-Troilus was decidedly disappoint-. :ing, and Peneus more so, for he was beaten three furlongs from home. Eafa gave an inglorious display, and Shining Armour even worse. BALGOWNIE HACK HANDICAP. Bisox was a £100 better, favourite than Avro and Kawhakina, these dominating "the betting. Resinous and Some Lad led down the , straight from Royal Acre,. •'.Freezeout, Royal Elm, Gasnapper, and ißisox, with Avro and Kawhakina last. ■ There.1 w(s little change until crossing the top, where Bisox made a move, but suft'er.ed a temporary check. She soon came again, and with Gasnapper and King Mart led into the straight from Avro and Flying Shot. Bisox came away in the runin to win by three lengths from Avro, who beat Gasnapper by two lengths. King Mart, Flying Shot, Kawhakina, and Royal Acre followed in that order. Bisox was always going well and she scored decisively. Her Hawera form suggested: it. .Avro was a trifle unlucky, but he had no chance with the winner. Gas- • napper. runs decent races now, but not finite good enough. He should score dur•ing the winter. King Mart and, laying. Shot ran fair races, King Mart going es■pecially well for a mile. Kawhakina. occupied an impossible place early "and did not improve a great deal. Royal Acre apparently is suited better by acven furlongs. ' • .
