CITY AND SUBURBAN WATER BOARD

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The article in to-night's issue of "Tho Post" on "Deforested Soil—a Lesson of Long Aro," will, I am afraid, fall on deaf ears as far as the Water Board is concerned. The Mayor's mandate has gone forth, "one area to be milled for a start, no more to be milled until the new forester arrives." Some time ago His Worship announced that if there were to bo no milling, no such officer would be appointed. The logical conclusion is that the Mayor has counted heads; the appointment has been made, and milling the bush is to be the policy of the board. Sir, it is to bo hoped that the City Council will, even at' this late moment, veto this retrograde proposal. This operation of the board this year will cost the City Council £iIOO out of the total estimated cost of £3000. The Mayor >of Upper Hutt, who bus to find £86 as his quota of the other £500, is of the opinion that the power of veto on the City Council's part should be abolished. It is to bo sincerely hoped that this will not be so. The Mayor of Wellington, at this period of tho Dominion's history, states that they have no expert advice to guide "'thorn regarding tho effect. The officer from the St:ite Forest Service will be placed in a most impossible position if called upon to lay down the policy, of the board in this respect. It is to be hoped that the City Council will take a broader view of its responsibilities than the board has. The main question is: What effect is milling going to have on tho future water supply catchment area of tho district? Cut out the question of the small revenue to be obtained from the millers altogether. There can only be one answer. —1 am, etc., HYGIENE.
