RIFLE SHOOTING
m SCHOOLS OF THE EMPIRE' (From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, 21st March. The report of tho National Itiile Association for 1927 mentions that owing to the extension of time allowed for firing the Imperial Challenge Shield's competitions from 30th September to 30th November, and consequently the later receipts of overseas results, it is impossible to include a resume of these competitions in the current year's reports, or to announce the winners of the King's Trophy or of the Imperial Shields or Swords. From tho returns which have been received it is evident that very satisfactory progress has been made. The results for Great Britain, which were published last December, show that SOOO boys fired through the competitions as against tiOOO last year; Canada contributed 4500 com-' pctitois, an increase of 1180, and the youth of South Africa, including several girls' schools which compete with remarkable success, furnished 13,000 filers compared with 8215 in 1920. Should the returns from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest o£ tho Empire show correspondingly good results tho total number of competitors should be upwards of 38,000. or an increase of over 10,000 in 1027. It is very satisfactory to record that this increase in numbers is also accompanied by an improvement in the standard of shooting. In this respect Canada shows greatest progress. Since the numbers from each Dominion permitted, the national teams in the match for the King's Trophy were increased from 2000 to 3000, and that this match may afford the widest possible comparison of the boys' eflicielioy' in each country, a further increase in the strength of the teams is contemplated in the near future.
