THE IMGAIO CLUB The lilteeulh annual general meeting of Hie Ngaio Chess Club was held in the Ngaio Town Hall on 21th April, there being a gratifying attendance of member*. Mr. F. J. Brooker (president) was in the chair. The lil'teenth annual report indicated that the club hull experienced a very successful .season. The membership was the same as in the previous year. There were nine entries' for the club championship, which was won by a new member, Mr. S. Fanlknor, with the good score of 7 wins and 1 draw. He thus becomes the holder of the Walt Challenge Cup for the ensuing year. Ml. Ernest E. Hicks, who has 'held this trophy during the past two years, was only half a point behind Mr. Faulk1101'. He I'mtliiT 'proved his consistency by Inking iirst prize in Ihe chili's annual handicap tourney, .Mr. .10. W. Ford coming second. 'The contest for the club's junior, championship, which attracted six entries, was handsomely won by Mr. .1. A. Glasgow, -who scored Ihe possible. Three matches were played against other clubs, of which two were won, Ihe club being successful against bolh the South 'Wellington C.C. and the Working Men's Club, while the annual fixture with the Wellington C.C. was lost. The club's representatives Were successful in winning the junior teams' contest of the Wellington Chess League. The balance-sheet shows a small profit on the year's working. Gratitude is expressed to the club's patrons for their valued support. The report and balancesheet were adopted unanimously. The election of officers resulted as follows:— Patrons, Mrs. E. E. Faulknor, Prince, and Eades were appointed a committee to draw up the programme of tourneys for the 1028-29 season, play in which is to begin this week. Mr. J. A. C. Barnes, a son of the well-known ex-champion of New Zealand (P. J. Barnes), who is now living ■ at Ngaio, was elected an active member. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to last year's officers, their services being greatly appreciated. ' The club opened the current season on Tuesday • evening with a lightning tourney, in which ten seconds were allowed for each move. Mr. E..J. Brooker acted as timekeeper, and there were twelve competitors. The first prize was won by Mr. S. Faulknor, the club champion, who made the good score of 9 wins and 2 losses. The second prize was annexed by a visitor, Mr. >T. A. Council, a former hon. secretary of the New Zealand Chess Association, who, it will be remembered, won a special prize for the best end-game in the first postwar tournament for the championship of: New Zealand. His score was 8-3—one point behind tlte winner.
