GENERAL ELECTION

CAMPAIGN NOTES

A well-atten.ded meeting of the supporters of Mr. Fred Pirani, Liberal candidate for Wellington Central, was held last night. Mr. J. H. Fuller was elected chairman, and arrangements made for an active prosecution of the political campaign. The ladies present were formed into a ladies' committee, with Mrs. Moore as president.

Mr. J. Read, the Labour candidate for Wellington North, speaking in the Post Office-square at midday to-day, mentioned tho matter of the excessive profits made by the J. P. Coats cotton, combine in Britain. It appeared from thy press report that, after having met the excess profits tax, tho shareholders were given a return of 80 per cent, on their | holdings. Mr. Read contended that this | was unblushing legal robbery of tho people of the Empire, Now Zealand having to pay its quota. If such extortionate rates of profit were to be permitted it could only be expected to act as a blight, which would spread throughout the community. The candidate said be did not hold with robbery by any section of the community, but returns such as those quoted were an incitement to all the most base motives in human nature.
