NEW YORK. 23rd July. Slight progress is being made on the battlefront. The German resistance is stiffening.

The French captured Oulcliy le Chateau, and the Americans captured Janlgonne. The French captured the heights north of Qourcelles. Tho French have begun an offensive north-west of Montdidier. General Pershing's communique states : The Americans have crossed the Marno and occupied Charteves.. Bezu-St. Germaine, and Epieds.

The British captured Petit Champ Wood, in the neighbourhood of Mar faux (Marne-Eeims front). Many prisoners were taken. (published in the times.)

A French communique states : The Germans attempted to-day by powerful counter-attacks to arrest our progress between the Mame and the Ourcq. The French and Americans resisted all assaults, and accentuated their progress. We passed the heights east of La Croix and Grisolles, and captured the village of Epieds. We gained ground north-east of Mont St. Pere, between the Mame and Reims. Hard fighting won no results for the enemy. We hold our lines in the Courton and Eoi Woods. The British advanced further north. There is great artillery activity, but no infantry action north of the Ourcq and in the Champagne. ' .'. ; ■ ■ „. .

Our bombing squadrons were active on the 21st, despite the weather, and dropped during the day and night fifty tons of bombs on communications, canionments, and bivouacs in the Veslo and Ardre Valley, and stations at Laon, !Fisne3, and Berry-au-Bac. ,
