; SALONIKA, 23rd August. The fire was awe inspiring. An avenue of flame a mile wide devoured everything in its course. The entire'business quarter on the seafront was destroyed; and the loss is enormous. The insurance is estimated at between two and three millions starling. The Allied troops ga-ye the utmost, assistance, though the scarcity of water was, a tremendous drawback. Each Allied army is providing for the destitute, the British alone tending 30,000. ■While the fire was burning three enemy aeroplanes dropped bombs on the town.
