BITTER FIGHTING IN FLANDERS
1 GAINS MAINTAINED AND
ADDED TO,
(KSUTER'B TELEGRAM.)
(Received August 24, 3.30 p.m,) LONDON, 23rd August.
Reuters correspondent at Headquarters states that all yesterday's gains in Flanders have been maintained and added to, in spite of desperate artillery fire 1 and counter-attacks. Yesterday's success was greater than an advance of a few hundred yards, and suggests that we are now fighting for the high ground dominating the whole tactical position in Northern Belgium. We have now bitten another slice out.of the ridg^ east of Ypres. . _ _ ' The enemy is concentrating to his utmost to retain this commanding position, hence the bitter fighting. .
