Greenslade (Auckland). ANOTHER MINERS' STRIKE ? GREYMOUTH, 22nd December. Tho miners at Blackball are very much discontented over the recent award made by the Arbitration Court on the pillar rate which came into force on 14th December. The price paid under the old award was 2s 4d a ton, and the new award reduces it to 2s 2d. The matter has been referred to the Miners' Federation, and the Blackball miners trust that it will uphold them in refusing, to work under the altered conditions. The general opinion is that the New Year will witness another strike. SALE OF EDUCATIONAL RESERVES. MASTERTON, 22nd Dec. Messrs. Abraham and Williams report as follow on their sales of education leases at Alfrcdton yesterday . — There was a large attendance of buyers, and bidding was brisk. Three out of five sections were disposed of as follow :—: — No. 1 (1679 acres), A. G. Edmunds, Eketahuna, at 2s 4d per acre ; No. 2 (1430 acres), J. Cross, Masterton, 6s per acre ; No. 3 (1268 acies), Leach Bros., Tenui, Is per acre. MASTERTON HOUSEBREAKERS. MASTERTOIM, 22nd December. Three men, Edward Richard Black, Charles Henderson, and Onirigo Tolley, were charged at the Police Court to-day with stealing a number of articles from various residents in Masterton and Carterton. Henderson and Tolley pleaded guilty and wero remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. Black was committed for trial to the Supreme Court. ' ALLEGED CATTLE STEALING. NAPIER, 22nd December. The last of a series of cattle-stealing charges was *ieard at the Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M. William Brewer was charged with stealing 44 head of cattle of tho value of £198, the property of Richard Keene and James Reid, on sth December, at Runaoiga, on the Na-pier-Taupo road. Accused reserved his dofence, and" was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed. BEQUEST TO WANGANUI HOSPITAL. WANGANUI, 22nd December. The last English mail brought to the Wanganui Hospital Board news of a useful Christmas box. The late Mr. f. K. Easson, of Perth, Scotland, has bequeathed aboufc £16,000, to be distributed in equal shares between the Wanganui. Hospital, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and Hillside Home, at Perth. THE SKELETON OF THE CABBAGE PATCH. CHRISTCHURCH, 22nd Dec. A resident of Brittain-street, North Linwood, made a gruesome find when digging in the domestic cabbage patch this morning. His spade struck against a hard object, and' on removing the soil concealing it, a human skull was discovered. After he had recovered from the shock, he pursued his exploration, and unearthed tho remains of what had been a human being. Probably the remains are those of a native, as there was a Maori settlement in that locality some years ago. This is not the first skeleton which has been found in the vicinity. The bones \vere then taken possession of by a constable, and submitted to the coroner for instructions as to their final disposition. WELCOME. GORE, This Day. At the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board in Gore yesterday the bequest of the late Mr. Wright, a farmer at Waimumu, was handed over by tho executors. The amount was £641, half of which is for the Maternity Home and half for the children's ward in connection with the Gore Hospital.
