INCREASED REVENUES. ! SIXTEEN WEEKS' COMPARISON". The customary four-weekly set of tramway returns was submitted to the Tramways Committee of the City Council last evening by the electrical engineer, (Mr. Stuart Richardson). They disclosed a satisfactory position, for on every section of tramway "an increase of returns by comparison with the corresponding, four weeks of last year is apparent. Even the unprofitable Wallace-street section has increased its revenue "by a trifla over £2, and on tho Brooklyn section another line that entails loss by its worki ing — tho receipts have increased by over £120. The greatest increase was shown by Island Bay, amounting to £236 odd. The official summary is as follows (shillings and pence being omitted) :—: — Revenue. In addition to the fare receipts, therei was income under other heads (such aa mileage dues and sales of current), which brought the gross total of the four weeks'revenue to £10,100, an increase of £1364 by comparison with last year's corresi ponding period. Working expenses (£6857) showed an increase of £512, which left an excess of revenue amounting to £3242, or £851 more than tha record for the four-weekly period of July, 1907. In the sixteen weeks that elapsed between Ist April and 21st July, ihe total revenue amounted to £41,098, being i £5713 more than last year's corresponding period. Working expenses amounted to £27,907, being an increase of £4099 over last year. A net surplus of £1167 is left from the sixteen weeks' revenue, after making provision for estimated proportion of interest, sinking fund, and depreciation. This amount ia £851 better than that of the first six.teen weeks of the financial' year of 1907.. PASSENGER RECORDS. In tho four weeks ended 21st July, there were 1,593,011 passengers carried on the trams, an increase of 195,659 by comparison with the July figures for 1907. Saturday, 27th June, was the busi- \ esb day. On that occasion 81,943 passengers were carried, the occasion being the second test match between the Rugby, teams of Great Britain and New Zealand, played at tlte Athletic Park.
