' Negotiations with tho Eastern Extension Company for the purchase of the Tasmanian cables having so far failed, the Federal Government is inviting tenders for the manufacture and laying of two cables between Victoria, and Tasmania, at 'an estimated cost of between £60,000 and £70,000. Tenders, accompanied by a depobit of £1000, close on 14th April. The company asked £39,000 for cables, buildings and balance of subsidy, but this the Federal Government could not see its way to give, SUBSIDENCE AT A MINE. A THOUSAND MEN IDLE. A thousand men have been rendered idle at the Rio Tinto Copper Mines in the Minas de Rio Tinto district, north oi Seville, owing to a subsidence.
