EXTRA EDITION. THE IMPRISONED BOOKMAKERS.
WILL THEY BE RELEASED ? [Bx -Telegraph.— Special to The Post.] DUNEDIX, This. Day. The Star learns that the sixteen bookmakers now in gaol in Christchurch for trespassing on Riccarton Racecourse will shortly be released. This step will be taken on account of the provision in the new Gaming Act which legalises bookmaking and authorises bookmakers being 'allowed on racecourses. On enquiry to-day a Post representative was informed by tho Minister for Justice that a number of applications had been received from bookmakers in gaol praying to be released. These applications havo not been considered by Cabinet. Mr. M'Gowan points out that the Gaming Act is not retrospective. The statement published by the Dunedin Star is, he says, premature.
