MARINE CASUALTIES.
THE WRECK OF THE STELLA. RECKLESS NAVIGATION. [FBESS ASSOCIATION.] London, 12th May. The enquiry into the wreck of the excursion steamer Stella, which struck on the Casquets Rocks, off Alderney, at Easier, while steaming through a log, has been concluded. The jury returned a verdict that the disaster was due to careless navigation, that the speed was excessive, and that no soundings had been taken. [It Avill be remembered that Captain Reekes drove at top speed through the fog in his anxiety to make a quick passage, and was heard to exclaim that he meant to arrive at his destination by 5 o'clock " if he broke his neck in the attempt." The Coroner's jury at the inquest on the victims added to its verdjet a rjder to the effect that it considered the disaster couid have beeu avoided if the captain (who perished with the vessel) had sloAved the engines during the fog and stood further out to sea.]
