SPORTING. THE RICCARTON CARNIVAL. [BY Austral.]

The Spring Meeting of the Canterbury Jookoy Club opens at Ricoarton to-morrow, and will bo continued on Thursday and Saturday. Largo numbers of North Island sporting enthusiasts have boon attracted Sautb by the spl«ndid acceptances received for tho varions events, notably in the New Zealand Cup, for whioh a record field of 19 horses will probably go to the post. Given fine weather, the gathering should prove the host on record, and the handioappor, Mr. J lE. Henry, will naturally feel proud of his successful effortß. My anticipations are as follows :— Spring Hurdles.— Molinilo, 1 ; Kapua, 2 ; Rosoius, 3. Maiden Plato.— Colebeck or Casket, 1 ; Marino, 2 j Sylvia Park, 3. New Zealand Cap. — Rosefeldt or Saracen, 1 ; Au Rovoir, 2 j Lottie, 3. Welcome Stakos.— Woodlander, 1 ; Nautil us 2 ; Kloodshot, 3. Biooarton Welter. — The Danaor or Lakeshell, 1 ; Mount Koyal, 2 ; Sylvia Park, 3. Stewards' Stakes.— i-t. Clements or Britomarte, 1 ; .Blarney, 2 ; Warrington, 3. For tho second and third days' racing, I fancy Bluo i ire will annox the Derby and Oakt>, Kosoius the Curragli Stoepleohaso, and Colebeck the Canterbury Cnp. An Oamaru resident has drawn the Raonalf, the ruling favourite, in .Tattersail's big sweop on tho Melbourne Cup. Qoorgo Wright, tne trainer of Th'reo Star, aoceptod a wagor of -E2lO to .£l2O from Paltoreon Bros on Saturday about the horse obtaining a placo in tho Now Zealand Cup. ' Austral" fancies oithor Bruin or Ruenaif will win the Melbourne Cup to-morrow. lUX 11 HI) I-UECBB ASSOCIATION.! (Beoeived November 5, 1.40 p.m.) Melbourne, This Day. Tho rainfall yesterday made the traoks oxtromely fast this morning, anil Ronda oleotrified the touts by doing a mile and aquarter in i'min 13&seo. Newman covered a mile and three-quarters splendidly in 3min lOseo. Bruin, i^ort Admiral, and Malachite, also did aomo fine work. Bonnie Scotland looked very proppy. Straißhtfire has been baoked to win a few thousands, down to 100 to 4, whioh price has ■ also been accepted to a moderate amonnt about Loyalty. Flemington touts rofuse to consider Ruenalf a certainty for the Cup, despite his . performance on Saturday and the opinion of the stable connections. Thoy argue that as ' he has not done a two mile gallop since his arrival, Nada, Newman, Malachito, Bruin, Honda, Tridentate, Tim Swivoller, or Devon, may beat him. T. Wilson, of Ballarat, considers that Golden King, who certainly looks amazingly well, possesses an excellent ohanoe. Stdnbt, Tnis Dat. Commenting on therace for the V.R.C. Derby, the Daily Telegraph's report says :— Despite tho field of 10, Oroamland's followers maintained belief in the colt'B ability to win , right np to the last, and he went out very firm at 5 to 4. The prices against the others underwent no material alteration from ' the previous day, but Question, Forward, Drydon, Destiny, and Atlas wore entirely friendless. Dreamland appeared like a colt that had had quite enough of it, but the others in the betting, inolnding Marusa, who recoived the allowance duo to a gelding, looked well. That there was a slight scrimmage when The Harvester closed in on Bonnie Scotland, 'Dreamland, and Forward was patent to most people who saw the raoo, but it did not affeot the result, for Bonnie Scotland, who had been most injudiciously ridden, was beaten at the time, and bo wore Forward and Dreamland, the latter having been in trouble on entering the straight Malachite Burprised everybody by the bold bid he made, and the position he ocoupied shows .what a good thing the race would have been for Cobbitty had that colt romained all right. The way in whioh Bonnie Scotland was handled spoiled his chance, but Atlas, Dryden, Marasa, Destiny, and Question were never dangerous. Most people were surprised at Question being deputed to ensnre a strong-run race /or Dreamland when it aeomod as if a slow one would have suited him better. Howover, the trainer and ownor thought otherwise. On returning to tba scale the owner of Malaohite entered a protest against Harvester for interference, and subsequently one was also lodged, on behalf of Bonnie Scotland against the first two, bnt it was too late to be entertained. After a very lengthy investigation the objeotion to Harvester's win was vory properly disallowed.' Dreamland's trainer wished to ■complain to the stewards against tun alleged foul riding of C. Moore on Harvester, bnt tho colt's owner would not permit it. The best horse of the day won 'without much doubt, and under different oiraumstanoes Bonnie Scotland was the only one whioh might have given him much trouble. Chbistohuech, Thu Day. This morning was about the coldest wit" netsed on the training track this season. Heavy rain fell yesterday afternoon for an hour, and as the grass and sand gallops were the only ones open, nothing special was done. The Cup horse Impulse put in along striding two rounds. Skirmisher was brought home the last half-mile of once round by Rangiatea. Primo Warden and Saracen oovered a mile with ease in lmin 50seo. Loontine, Westmere, and Lottie, each alone, traversed the same distance, the last without exerting herself, in lmin 49sec. Au Kevoir ran six furlongs in lmin 18seo, and Koyal Rose and Clanranald took two seconds longer, both ridden out. Britomarte and Three Star finished in front of The Dancer over five furlongs, run in lmin 6}soo. Rose feldt and Marino oooupied two seconds longer over the same ground. In the betting market Saracen is a firm favonrite at 5 to 1 ; Prime Warden and Au Itevoir, 7 to 1; Rosefeldt, 8 to 1; Royal Rose, Skirmisher, Magazine, and Lottie, 10 to 1 ; Impulse, Clanranald, and Three Star, 15 to 1; Westmere, Rangipuhi, Mahaki, Aldershot, Pegasus, and Leontine, 25 to 1. Purepo is an improbable starter. Beadonwell was scratched this morning. "Speotator" selects Melitiite for the Hnrdles, with Minerva as the best outsider ; Casket, Colebeok, and Marino in order for the Maiden, Goodwood, if started, a likely outsider ; for the New Zealand Cnp, which is a very open race, Au Revoir or Lottie, with Magazine next best ; Riooarton Welter, Goodwood or Rothamstead ; Welcome Stake", Carihou or Nautilus Shell; Ladies' Purse, Ohaos orßarnardo ; Sto wards' Stakes, Neroli, Barmby, and Britomarte, in order ; the Shorts, Jess.
