PROSPECTS OF THE COLONIES.
I SPECIAL.] (Received November 5, 11.55 a.m.) London, Ist Novomber. The Statist, in a contributed article, says that the depression in the Australian colonies is only temporary, and will not check their growth. The writer expects a rapid increase in their population in tho early f ntnre. On the subjeot of defence, ho thinks the colonies will offer a strong temptation to an enemy unless Imperial defences are organised, and the control of the ocean secured.
