THE PETONE DRAINAGE SCHEME.

» In bis report on a system of drainage for Fetone, winch is to be considered at the spooial meeting of the fetone Borough Coancil this evening, Mr. Maxwell states that a complete drainage system can only be obtained by pumping, but that from the large area of tho township, the relatively thin population, the direct and contingent expenses at present preclude such a scheme. Mr. Maxwell proposes to put down a main drain or culvert 3ft by 4ft from Campbell Terrace to the sea, and and open drain from Udy-street to Campbell Terrace, constructed with a concrete invert, bo that it can be covered in if desired, and the arrangement of the levels are such that obstructions can be cleared by hand. For flushing purposes tanks fitted with ball-cocks and hand-plugs to discharge the contents at low water are recommended, and also that tanks be provided near the heads of the chief drains for foccasional flnshing. Most of the drainage between Victoria and Beach streets can be dealt with by the main drain, separate pipe outlets being required for <Jueen trod Cuba streotß and the west end of the township. In the chief drains Kin pipes are to be üßed, and the flow of sewage in these drains is estimated at 153 ft per minute, as against 118 ft originally estimated. The estimated cost is .£10,500. The main drain is shown on the line of the old drainage reserve, but if this is objeoted to it can, at no greatly-inoreased cost, be taken down Nolson-street as a dosed culvert thronghont. Nelson-street, in this case, would have to be raised as muohas 2ft 6inatthe northern end. Respecting the flood question, Mr. Maxwell says that the Council cannot be too careful in excluding the Hutt flood waterß from the township. The Hutt is raising its bed in the lower reacheß. and there is obvious danger of the flood waters passing across the ridge and taking the most direot course to the sea. He proposes that a bank be constructed from near the main road north of Peroy's Creek, to the ridge and along it. This wonld relieve the land north of the bank from flood waters from Peroy's and Biddler's oreeks, and will not interfere with the natural flow and the outfall of the Hutt flood waters by Moran's creek. Where Cuba -Btreet has been' cut through the ridge it should be raised again, as if not attended to there is great risk of the Hutt River forming a new outlet, which would prove destructive to properties at the eastern end of the township. The proposed bank will_ be -partly formed from the catchwater drain to be made alongside, and partly from the main drain excavation. The report also suggests the advisability of the Council taking land wide enough for a road with a view of ultimately constructing it inside the bank, which will give possession of the ridge across seotions 6, 7, and 8, enabling the Council to preserve the bank from being out down,
