CLERGY AND THE STRIKE.
EMPLOYER'S LETTER. With reference to tho resolution passed at a meeting of the clergymen held on Sunday in regard to the strike, Mr. Fin. I'ryor (secretary of the Employers' Federation) has forwarded tho following letter to tho Rev. A. T. Brainsby, on behalf of tho Federation: —
"Dear Sir,—At a- meeting of the Advisory Board held- yesterday (Tuesday) tho resolution which was framed by ministers and handed to tho president of the Employers' Federation, was read. I am directed by tho executive to acknowledge receipt of tho communication and to stato that the Employers' Federation, fully roalising the responsibility resting on them in. the present crisis, are fully seized with the necessity of conciliatory methods, and are most aiixous to end tho strkc-, and t'hat tho workers should resumo their employment, but only oil; a solid and permanent basis, for which adequate and satisfactory guarantees, must a be given. If, however, the workers will _ not so resumo work, the employers, in duty bound and in the interests of tho suffering public, must- take steps to provide tho labour required to carry on tho business of the country. Tho employers insist on the absolute right of every man to engago in lawful work without interference, and inasmuch as every person has a right to protection and security in carrying oil, his lawful business, tho employers call on tho Government (whose duty it is) to take measures necessary to secure and maintain law and order."
