“A HEARTBREAKING SITUATION”
JEWISH TRUST IN BRITAIN
LONDON, September 10
The Very Rev. Joseph Herman Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Empire, in a message issued on the occasion of the Jewish New Year, says: “It is a heartbreaking situation that the old year is passing on to us. Russia and Germany are not the only lands of agony for contemporary Israel. Anti-Jewish propaganda is encircling the globe and everywhere Is poisoning opinion against the Jews. Grave uncertainty and perhaps sheer destruction faces the Jewries of Austria, Poland, and the Holy Land.” Referring to Palestine, the Chief Rabbi adds: “As loyal citizens of Britain, which is the earth’s nearest realisation of might coupled with justice and humanity, we deem her incapable of a breach of faith. As Jews we cling to the Divine promise of Israel’s resurrection in the Holy Land.”
