CENTENARY GOLF AT ADELAIDE

SARAZEN LEADS AFTER SECOND ROUND (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received September 11, 11.55 p.m.) ADELAIDE September 11. Gene Sarazen, with 70, took the lead to-day in the second round of the centenary open golf championship, which was played in. brilliant sunshine. Sara*zen’s putting and his second shots were 50 per cent, better than yesterday, although his driving was less satisfactory. He took 35 each way. The South Australian. W. Rymill, is closely pressed Sarazen, and N. von Nida is improving his position. F. McMahon and A. Toogood are level, with 146, in third position. The first six are Sarazen 144, Rymill 145, McMahon and Toogood 146, L. Destree 147, N. von Nida 149. Miss Helen Hicks, the only lady competitor. who yesterday returned 78, crashed to-day, returning a cord of 81 and an aggregate of 159. . HAWKE’S BAY TITLE ENGLISHMAN’S EASY WIN (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) HASTINGS, September 11. Playing faultless golf, H. J. Longstafle defeated A. Kawhe, in the final of the Hawke’s Bay golf championshipLongstaffe, an Englishman on holiday in IJew, Zealand, learned golf at the famous links at Troon, Scotland. He completed the morning round in 71, against Kawhe’s 78, and won the match 8 up and 7 to play. LICENSED TRADE HOLDS TOURNAMENT The first annual tournament of the Canterbury Licensed Trade Golf Club was held at Templeton in ideal conditions. There was a large attendance of members. The winners of the respective competitions were as follows:—Alf. Barrett Challenge Cup, G. W. Passmore; New Zealand Breweries Challenge Cup, H. Marshall, jun.; Baliins Breweries Challenge Cup, B. J. Wilks; Coronet Challenge Cup, J. McKay; Tintara Challenge Cup, A. Holland; Bulloch Lade Challenge Bowl, B. F. Smyth. The stroke competition for visitors was won by W. Millner. At the conclusion of the day’s play the trophies were presented by the president, Mr A. Barrett. AKAROA CLUB The following were the best cards handed In for the Stapleford bogey match played among members of the Akaroa Golf (Club; —l. Penlington, 11, 26—37; V. Erocherie, 15, 20—35; A. Shuttleworth, 8. 26—34. Junior Championship—Men—First round: P. G. Riches beat I. Penlington, V. Brocherie beat J. Helps, R. McKenzie beat J. Le Lievre, D. Helps beat C. A. Young. Women; Miss E. White beat Miss E. McKay, Miss S. Oliver beat Mrs G. Le Lievre, Miss S. Armstrong beat Mrs Eves, Mrs Ramsay beat Mrs McKay. METHVEN LADIES’ CLUB The Methven Ladies’ Golf Club played an 18-hole stroke match. The- best cards returned were:—Miss A. White 79 net, Miss C. Holmes 79. Play in the Ireland Vase competition ended as follows:—Miss May Campbell 233, Miss Cecile Holmes 236, Miss E. Stowe 236. In the mid-week match Mrs J. F. Stowe returned the best card with 50 net and Mrs A. Lawrence was second with 51 net.
