FRENCH COMEDY PRODUCED
♦ "LE MEDECIN MALGRE LUI" AT CANTERBURY COLLEGE A comedy in three acts, "Le Medecin Malgre Lui," by the seventeenth century French dramatist Moliere, was presented by the Canterbury College French Club at the college Little Theatre last evening. The dialogue was spoken throughout in the original French of Moliere, and full" period costume was worn by the cast. Though the difficulty of producing a full-length drama in a foreign language is'considerable, the action proceeded easily, and the broadly farcical nature of the plot and incident was well appreciated by the audience. The part or. Sganarelle, the drunken wood-cutter, tricked by his wife into appearing'as a doctor, was capably handled by Mr C. E. W. Steward, and Miss Yyette Rigg made a charming Lucinde,. the girl who pretends illness to avoid a marriage forced on her by her father. "Le Medecin Malgre Lui"—the doctor in spite of himself—was first produced in the Palais Royal Theatre., in Paris, on August 6, 1666. It is unique in being the only farce written by Moliere. . The cast for last evenings performance was as follows:—Sganarelle, Mr C E. W. Steward; Martine, Miss R. Ensor; M. Robert, Mr L. J. Sutton; Valere, Mr A. Curnow; Lucas, Mr *. M. Brown; Geronte. Mr W. K. McIlroy; Jacqueline, Miss D. Craig; Lucinde. Miss Y. Rigg; Leandre Mr K. R. Austin: Thibaut, Mr L. J. Sutton: Perrin, Mr E. S. Low. ■ The producer was Mr J. H. T. Curnow. -•
