RAILWAY TRAFFIC
; MUCH FREIGHT MOVING | ! Railway freight traffic is unusually ! heavy for the time of year, and with i large movements of frozen meat all ! available rolling stock is at present in use. Freight traffic from the West Coast is also heavy, and there was a large increase last week in the amount of goods passing through the Otira tunnel, compared with the sane week or" last year. Last week 11,421 tons i passed through the tunnel, compared with 9895 tons in the same week last | year. Last week, the total was 11,049 I tons, compared with 9967 tons last ! year.
Passenger traffic at present is fairly quiet, but a busy time is anticipated during Grand National Week, and in the week immediately following, when large numbers of country visitors, particularly school children, come into Christchurch to see the Winter Show. On Sunday the next mystery tramping excursion will be held, this time to the Mount Grey district. A tramp of about 11 miles' over eas-y country has been arranged.
