GERMAN ELECTION

NATIONALISTS AGHAST. GRAND COALITION PROBABLE. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTBIC TELEGRAPH— COPYRIGHT.) (Received May 22nd, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 22. Berlin messages report that it is stated semi-officially that Cabinet intends to postpone its resignation until the Reichstag meets about June 12th. Nationalists are aghast at the debacle, and are lamenting the bourgeois disunion. It is realised that the elections represent a pronounced swing to the Left, but there is equal dis.unity among Labourites and Communists, who are sworn enemies of the Socialist "traitors." The increase in the Communist vote is most disquieting, 3,200,000 electors proclaiming obedience to Moscow. The "Morning Post's" Berlin correspondent states: "It is indeed fortunate that the Socialists are not strong enough to form a Coalition without the People's Party, as they might have been unable to resist the replacement of Dr. Stresemann. The only possible majority seems to be a Grand Coalition, consisting of the People's Party, Centre Democrats, and Socialists."—Australian Press Association.

SOCIALISTS' STRONG PARTY. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) BERLIN, May 21. The elections for the Prussian Diet were held simultaneously with the General Election, and also resulted in a heavy defeat for the Nationalists, who lo9t 42 out of 109 seats. The Socialists are the strongest Party, with 114 seats. Communists have 50 seats, and all the others combined 219 seats. The London "Daily Mail," in a leader, states that the result of the German elections distinctly favours peace, and the advocates of a war of revenge have been defeated in many instances. The strongest party will be the Socialists, the German variety of which is less extreme than the British. The most important feature is the fading of the Hohenzollerns. Germany is definitely turning from Monarcliism to Republicanism. The "Taglische Rundschau" asserts that Cabinet will tender its resignation to-morrow. —Australian Press Association, United Service.
