A TRAITOR AT MANILA.
The Fcrst California Volunteers has bad the misfortune to number a traitor in its ranks. His punishment lias, however, been prompt and terrible,- After a recent engagement in the vicinity of Manila (writes ' the San Francisco correspondent of the Sydney "Daily Telegraph"), the body of, the miserable man was found, pierced with balls, lying in a trench, where the Filipinos had made a stand a«auist the Americuii troops. - His name was Henry T. Haze, and he was a corporal in Company D. Ha turned out to be- a drunkard and a thief, ajnd finally deserted to the enemy. He was led to this act by his infatuation for a Filipino woman, in whose company he left Manila and made his way to Aguiiu tldo's -tmly. Iv it Haze accepted a commission as an officer, end fought against his country and the troops of which he bad - formed part; His career was, fortunately, brief, he being killed by American bullets in General Wheaton's advance.from-Meialfll. In spite of an edict that neither would admitted to a sale, the other day (relates.the "H&wke's Bay H-rald'') - one enterprising mother smuggled a couple of her offspring in. Nothing daunted, she placed them in a bedstead that had been sold prior to her entrance, the eiderdown quilts > and comfortable, bedding being beyond sistence as a. temporary resting place for the little cherubs. While the wielder of the hammer was busily .engaged disposing of the fine array of fm*niture, there arose a plaintive wail from one of the bedsteads, and ft search revealed the presence of the tiny babes. The purchaser of the bedstead was horrdr-strucki for'he had not. counted-on Y . these being thrown into his bargain. The thoughtful mother, however, allayed all fear on that score, and a heavy burden was taken from the shoulders of the purchaser.
