WELLINGTON, June 26.
The statement in a Press Association telegram from Dunedin that the GovernWent, "true to their Democratic instincts made no recommendations as to the Jubilee honours," has caused a good deal of com-, ment here, and I learn that it lias not been customary for our Governments, for some considerable time past at all events, to make, such recommendations. In conversation With Sir Robert Stout 10-day he informed mc that neither the Grey-Stout-Vogel, nor the Atkinson Governments, aa far as he knew, ever made any such recommendations. Indeed, the only man recommended in this "*_y for titular distinction was the late Sir Patrick Buckley, and he was.recommended tar knighthood by the Gov_mmeut of the party now in power. The Wellington AcclimfttifftHon Society nae received £400 for shooting licenses the largest sum so far collected for any one "season.
Mr Hall-Jones leaves for the South this evening. - Major Steward and Mr Tregeir, Benefit Society Commissioner*, l«ft for Auckland to-day, It turns out that there ik another »»*ie to the evidence given before'the Commission here regarding the 'Bank of New Zealand Society. The Society, it appears, Would have gone on all right but for the fact that certain Colonial Bank officials now ,iii the Bank of New Zealand did not vrtint to join it, and started a fund of their own. The result was that tbe Bank of New Zealand fund was crippled. Mr T. E. Taylor doe 3 not approve of the titular distinction bestowed upou his leftdcV, "The Right Honourable Br. Richard John Seddon." He wnnrked in bitter tones at the temperance meeting last night—"lt »«ly requires that he should have the title of Doctor of Divinity to make the farce complete." Whereupon the audience laughed very heartily. The evening paper says a "foreign" mission to ministers of Christian churches who are not prohibitionists was suggested to Mr T. K. Taylor, M.H.R., last evening, as being a capital thing. The speaker was, as usual, very severe on Christians who are not prohibitionists, his personal references on the occasion not being in the beat of taste. • -.
