NORSEWOOD ROAD BOARD.

Tlie adjourned meeting of the Norsewoocf Road Board was held on Saturday evening. Present— Messrs Nordby (chair), Andersen, Johansen, and Miller. Correspondence received : — From the Property Tax Commissioner, informing the Board that early application should be made for rates on Crown and Native lands.- Received. From Mr D. Mackay, of Danevirke, stating that McGaughran had not been credited with the amount of the order (^lO 10s) gjyen qn the Board in h,iel(Mr Mackay's) favour, and that the order had not appeared in the writer's statement of assets, McGaughran having been charged with the full amount of his debt.— -The Chairman did not think, that it was fair to keep back tUe money longer, now tlmt they understood the Board's position in the matter.— The Clerk explained that he had not been authorised to pay over tie money, and did not think ttiatths

Board ran any risk in paying the money to McGaughran after receiving Mr Mackay's letter,^-Mr Andersen proposed and Mr Johansen seconded, That the money be paid to McGaughran.— Carried. " The Chairman gave in a list o! amounts to be laid out on roads in the Road District. He had estimated that amounts totalling £395 were urgently needed on the roads dealt with. The third' line would require the greatest outlay, but there were other roads in very bad order. The amounts could be altered by tbe Board ; some would perhaps stand at his estimate, but others would be either reduced or increased as they though**- best. Estimate read, being, as follows :— Third line, ,£l3O ; Mortensen's road, £50 ; New German road, .£SO ; Dabl's road, .£3O ; Thomson's road, Jls ; Andersen's road, £20; Jakobsea's road, .£10 ; German line, £20 ; Matamau road, £7 (In reply to the Chairman the clerk stated that £3 14s lid was due to this road on returned thirds.); Barach's road, £10. Mr Miller stated, in answer to Mr Johansen, that there are about 30 chains'. of this road requiring immediate attention. Namoko main road (40 chains), £30. The Chairman explained that the amounts voted included in every case the mbney due from returned thirds. Mr Miller would again draw attention to a dangerous tree on German line. This tree was on the road. He knew that the contractor had taken the road to the right of where it had been laid out, but this proved that the tree was on the road.; if the tree had been upon the other side of the road he would not have been quite certain of this, but as it was' there could be' no doubt about the matter. The road had only lately been made by the county, and although the county overseer and roadman had seen the tree in question they liad passed the work which should not nave been done, until the tree was felled. The Chairman thought that if this tree was on the road it should be felled and cleared. Mr Andersen was of the same opinion, and the sooner this was done the better. Mr Miller thought that in dealing with the proposed expenditure on roads, the school road (Bartoch's) should be attended to first. The Chairman thought that where possible the money voted should be spent in formation and metalling. There were three places on the third line that wanted doing at once. Mr Miller was inclined to think that there would be money left of the vote tor the new German road, but of course this would depend on how cheaply the contracts were taken. Mr Andersen did not consider there would be much left out of that vote : it would, they would find, be all wanted there. The Chairman would point out that no money had been spent on Mortenson's road yet, and tbe money should be laid out there as soon as possible. Mr Andersen concurred ; the £50 voted for that road would do a little good if laid out at once, but less than that sum would be of no use. On the motion of Mr Andersen, seconded by Mr Johansen, the whole of the votes were passed. • Ihe Chairman thought that they had better- call for tenders for work at Lund's hill ; there were 11 chains of road there that wanted attending to very badly. There would be a culvert wanted there, and thought that two 18-inch pipes should be used. Mr Miller thought that a culvert that size should take away all the water. Mr Andersen doubted it ; sometimes there was a great quantity of water there. The Clerk was asked how much the pipes would cost, and after looking through the former accounts said about £13 10s for pipes. The Chairman thought that if there was any doubt as to two 18-inch pipes taking away all the water, they had better add a 15-inch pipe. If, however, this was too dear they could put, in a 12-inch pipe ; he did not think it would cost more than £26 or £27. Mr Johansen : That would take 99 pipes. On the motion of Messrs Andersen and Johansen, it was decided to call for tenders for this work, tenders to close by next ordinary meeting, and a deposit of 10 per cent to be required, and the time allowed to be 3 months. The Chairman did not think it wise to call for tenders for more than this work now, but before next meeting I they should go round and see the other places. Mr Johansen pointed out that one member (Mr J. Hansen) had not attended for some time, this being the fourth meeting that he had been absent ; this left one man less to look after the work, as it was no use to appoint him to look after any oarticular road unless he was likely to attend to it. It was found by a reference to the minute book that Mr Hansen had ceased to be a member of the Board, but the Clerk reminded the Board that they were not bound to declare his seat vacant. Mr Andersen did not care to see any action taken in the matter, as the j Board would be put to the expense of an election if this were done. Mr Andersen reported that Mr Christiansen's work :■ on Odia street had been satisfactorily completed, and the amount was passed for payment, This was all the business.
