The, Union Steamship Company's director^' .'aftet going into the matter of the coal miners' strike in . i^ew. South iWales, find that it will involve very serious expense to the company. Their consumption of coalis 150,000 tons per annum, and now that none is available in Newcastle it means purchasing in New .Zealand at higher rates. Orders have"; therefore been given to the captains to husband the coal, and !an. increase in the time of the trips ; may, be ; expected. In addition to this, as the; steamers have to take , enough, coal from New Zealand for the rgund trip, the outward freight earnings are curtailed, which means JB4OO to £500 per month. Next montii the r .company /will withdraw Bpine of the steamers in the Sydney ' service, and freights' are announced to be increased.
