ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY.
Last evening as the train to Napier was between Matamau and Makotultu the engine driver saw a lad walking along the line, and although the whistle was blown he did not appear to pay any attention. Steam was shut off, and the brakes applied, but the boy, who is not mentally strong, was struck in th ■ face by the fore part of the engine, and thrown off the line. The train was brought to a standstill, and the injured lad picked up, when it was found that he had received a severe gash across the nose and front portion of the face. The boy, who turned out to bo a son of Mr Thompson, the schoolmaster at Matamau, was taken on board the train and his wounds attended to, and upon arrival at Makotuku a telegram was sent to a doctor to meet the train at Ormondville. This was done, and after the lad had been attended to by a doctor he was taken on to the hospital at Waipukurau, where he is doing favorably.
