LAND FOR SETTLEMENT BILL.
In the House yesterday Sir George Grey moved the second reading of the Land for Settlement Bill., He said it was before the House last session. It provided the means by which every family in the colony might obtain a homestead and settle on land which would become their own property. The inability to do so had driven many people from the colony.— The Premier said he would notoppose the second reading, as the Bill would receive careful consideration from the Waste Lands Committee, but he was afraid that as it stood it was not practicable. He, regretted. Sir. George Grey had not embodied in theßillthe amendments made by the committee last year. The measure as it stood was dangerous.— ln reply Sir George Grey said that the Government had given or were going to give away several million acres of land, and every day it became more urgent that land should be found for "settlement. He defended the system of payment by bonds, quoting Prussia as an instance of the success of the application of that system.-? The second reading was agreed to "on the voices.
