BELOW AVERAGE.
WASTAGE OF N.Z. FRUIT.
MAINTAINING OF QUALITY.
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. In a statement with reference to rejected fruit, the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W . Xash, said to-day that the wastage during the present year was below average, and was approximately only 2 per cent. A email number of good apples may have been rejected by inspectors, but the evidence illustrated that care had been exercised to ensure good fruit sale to the public. Rejection of unwound fruit was essential to maintain the quality of the fruit sold to the public. Rejected doubtful fruit had been disposed of to pig farmers. With a view to eliminating all possibility of waste of good fruit, it had been arranged to transfer all doubtful fruit to suitable public institutions, where it could be cut to enable good fruit to be reserved for human consumption. It had been taken for granted that it was in complete opposition to the policy of the Government to allow any apples fit for human consumption to be wasted.
