CHPISTCHURCH, Wednesday.
'Important steps toward the construction of .tlie new hydroelectric |>ower works at Lake Tekapo will be taken shortly, a contract, having been let 'by the Public Works Department for the boring- of test holes on the site of the proposed dam. After investigations extending over more than a year, Cabinet gave authority recently «for the prosecution of this' hydro-electric power •scheme, which has for 'somift' time been projected as part of the- Government's long-range programme ■ of- power supply development. " 7 The Tekapo scheme,, involve* the construction of a dam at the outlet to the lake, and the driving Of a tunnel a mile long from the lake: to the site Of the power house in- .the Waitaki gorge. The scheme will not only provide a. new • and independent' source of electric power, 'but also it wiR, through the conservation of water and regulation of the flow of the Waitaki Rivier, assist in developing the Waitaki scheme to its full capacity of T5,000 kilowatts.
