LABOURER GAOLED.
THEFT OF A BICYCLE.
"This theft caused considerable inconvenience to the owner of the machine, who was working on the Harp of Erin Estate," said Detective-Sergeant Walsh in the Police Court to-day, when Gordon Arnott, aged 30, labourer, pleaded guilty to the theft of a bicycle valued at £11, the property of Edmund Watson. Detective J. Clements read a signed statement made by the accused in which he said that for a month past he had been sleeping at night under a tree at Penrose. He had taken the bicycle from where the owner had left it whilst at work and had later sold it to a secondhand dealer for £1. Being suspicious, the dealer gave the accused a crossed cheque and also got into touch with the police. Accused was arrested before he had time to negotiate the cheque. Arnott was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
