ROUND OF 71.

R. E. BELL IN FORM. WINS MIDDLEMORE MEDAL SCORING EASY IN THE CLUB COMPETITIONS. A new record of 71 was established at Akarana by P. G. F. Smith in winning the senior medal at Akarana on Saturday. Previously Smith and S. S. Wilson jointly held the record, 73. Smith's form is encouraging for the North Island championship which takes place at Palmerston North at Easter. This event he won last year, defeating J. P. Hornabrook in the final. He will defend his title at the tourney, which starts on Saturday next. It is a knock-out match play event with the field limited to 32. In winning the scratch medal at Middlemore with a round of 74, K. E. Pell drew attention to his provincial championship prospects. This event he won at Middlemore in 1937, and it will again be played on that course commencing with the qualifying rounds on Saturday next. At Titirangi the qualifying rounds of the Ballin Cup (handicap medal) was played, T. A. Taylor leading with a net 70. An outstanding performance was that of J. Pelham at One Tree Hill. Playing in a Stableford, he had a medal round of 70, and won the event with a score of 40. There was good scoring on other courses, which was to be expected, as conditions are easy at present. Players , hitting a reasonably good tee shot find the two-shot holes within easy reach, and frequently the greens are wjthin range of a mashie. AKARANA CLUB. Members of the Akarana Golf Club played the first round of the Tyler Memorial Cup, together with the senior and junior monthly medal and Stableford. In the medal handicap at Middlemore last week, when he incurred a penalty for plaving the wrong ball at the thirteenth hole. T. E. Clark was again in good form on Saturday. In a day of good conditions he had a ilear-cut win in the medal handicap with a net 07—five strokes better than bis handicap of ten. The Aucklaml provincial champion of two years ago. the youthful K.
